Chicago September Events You Don’t Want to Miss

Labor Day may signify the official end of the Summer season and all of its fun-in-the-sun activities, but trust us – the fun isn’t over!  September in Chicago is packed with all sorts of exciting festivals and events for every interest and taste. And, while the weather may be cooling off, there’s still plenty of time to enjoy the fresh warm air at some of the top Chicago September events.  

Let’s take a closer look at some of the events that should be on your social calendar this season: 

German-American Oktoberfest

When:  September 6th – September 8th 

Where:  Lincoln Square

Grab your lederhosen and a stein!  This annual Lincoln Square celebration kicks off Oktoberfest season in Chicagoland.  The massive street party will feature all kinds of delicious German food, music, dancing, and of course, beer.  

Renegade Craft Fair

When:  September 7th and September 8th 

Where:  Division St. between Damen Ave. and Ashland Ave., Wicker Park

The Renegade Craft Fair will take over Wicker Park in September as makers from all across the nation will gather for one weekend to show off their craft.  It’s a great opportunity to find the perfect seasonal gifts for friends and loved ones, as you can find everything from handmade art, to jewelry, to pottery, one-of-a-kind clothing, and more.  In addition to the more than 400 vendors that are expected to turn out, you’ll also find delicious food and drinks from local restaurants, as well as live DJs.    

Riot Fest

When:  September 13th – September 15th 

Where:  Douglas Park, North Lawndale

Chicago is ready to continue its summer rock out with one of the Fall season’s most anticipated concert events – Riot Fest!  This year’s electric festival will feature headliners Blink-182, Slayer, Bikini Kill, the Raconteurs, and Rise Against. They will be joined by the Flaming Lips, Patti Smith, Jawbreaker, Die Antwoord, Ween, and more at Douglas Park for this three-day carnival of music.  Whether you want to let your inner punk rocker out or chill to some indie tunes, this festival has something for every taste. Plus, festival goers will get to enjoy all kinds of food, drinks, and activities throughout the long weekend.

Chicago Gourmet

When:  September 27th – September 29th 

Where:  Millennium Park

This Chicago favorite food fest kicks things off on Friday with its annual Hamburger Hop throwdown.  It’s a chance to taste the creative feats by a huge lineup of chefs all gathered to show off their patty skills.  Then, the rest of the weekend boasts the Grand Tasting event, where cooking demos, tasting pavilions, and wine tastings will fill the Great Lawn.  

Hyde Park Jazz Festival

When:  September 28th and September 29th 

Where:  Loop (Check the website for a full list of venues.)

Head to Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park for a series of shows during this beloved annual festival. This year’s lineup features the Art Ensemble of Chicago, jazz vocalist Cécile McLorin Salvant, pianist Eddie Palmieri, and a tribute to Nat King Cole.  

Just because summer is over doesn’t mean the fun is.  This is just the smallest glimpse of exciting cultural events you’ll find in and around Chicago this September.  So, don’t tuck away that social calendar just yet – things are just getting started!
